A knocked-out (avulsed) tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies - the sooner it's reimplanted, the better the chance of saving it. If you or your child has a tooth knocked out, handle it by the crown (not the root), rinse it gently if dirty without scrubbing, and try to place it back in the socket or keep it in milk while you call us immediately. We'll see you as quickly as possible to attempt reimplantation.

What should I do immediately after a tooth is knocked out?
Pick it up by the crown, not the root, rinse it gently if dirty (no scrubbing), and try to reinsert it into the socket. If that's not possible, keep it in milk and call us right away.
How quickly do I need to get to the dentist?
As fast as possible - ideally within 30 to 60 minutes gives the best chance of successfully saving the tooth.
Can a knocked-out baby tooth be reimplanted?
Generally no - baby teeth are usually not reinserted, as doing so can damage the developing permanent tooth underneath. We'll still want to see your child promptly to check for other injuries.
What happens if the tooth can't be saved?
If reimplantation isn't possible, we'll discuss replacement options like a bridge, denture, or implant once the area has healed.
